The 21-year-old footballer played a prominent role in Barcelona‘s first two matches of the current season, showcasing his talent and importance to the team. However, his progress was unfortunately halted when he sustained an injury to his right knee during a training session in August.
Initial concerns were raised that the Spain international might have experienced a recurrence of the serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear that he had suffered the previous year, in 2023. This type of injury is known to be quite severe and can significantly impact a player’s career and playing capabilities.
Fortunately, after undergoing detailed medical scans, it was confirmed that Gavi had managed to avoid another ACL tear. Despite this positive news, further examination revealed damage to the cartilage in his knee, which necessitated surgical intervention. As a result, he underwent an operation to repair the damaged cartilage, aiming to restore full functionality and enable a successful recovery.
“Gavi has had an arthroscopy to resolve a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus,” a Barcelona statement read.
“Recovery time is estimated at around four to five months.”
“He’s a player with a big heart and a lot of emotion,” Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said.
“It’s not easy for this team, because he has a huge quality for us, but every one of us will support him and will help him to reach his level again.”
Gavi became the fourth youngest player to make his debut in the history of FC Barcelona when he first appeared for the senior team in 2021. Since then, he has made a significant impact, scoring a total of 10 goals across 155 appearances for the club.
Throughout his time at Barcelona, he has contributed to the team’s success by helping them secure five major trophies. However, the promising midfielder faced a major setback when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear while representing the Spanish national team in November 2023, which sidelined him for approximately 11 months. Despite his absence, Barcelona have remained competitive in the league and are currently positioned second in La Liga, trailing their longtime rivals Real Madrid by five points but holding the advantage of having one game in hand.
